Callan’s giant induction coil consists of an inner coil of heavy wire on iron core and small number of turns. The outer coils consist of twenty miles of fine iron wire hand insulated with beeswax. He was generating voltages of the order of 600,000 Volts and was able to obtain a spark to jump 15 inches in air in 1840.
